Today, I want to talk about the Spanish F1 2023, which took place last Sunday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. It was a thrilling race that had everything: drama, overtakes, strategy, and a dominant performance by the championship leader. Let’s dive into it!
The race started with a bang, as Max Verstappen defended his pole position from a charging Carlos Sainz, who had qualified second for his home race. The Ferrari driver tried to go around the outside of Verstappen at Turn 1, but the Red Bull driver held his nerve and kept the lead. Behind them, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell made quick progress from their fourth and 12th grid slots respectively, showing the improved pace of their upgraded Mercedes cars.
Verstappen quickly pulled away from Sainz, who was unable to match the Red Bull’s pace on the medium tyres. Hamilton was the first of the front-runners to pit on Lap 22, switching to hard tyres and hoping to undercut Sainz. However, Ferrari reacted swiftly and brought Sainz in on the next lap, keeping him ahead of Hamilton. Verstappen pitted on Lap 24, also opting for hard tyres, and rejoined with a comfortable lead.
The race then settled into a rhythm, with Verstappen controlling the gap to Sainz and Hamilton behind him. Russell was also on a charge, having passed Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso on track to move up to fourth place by Lap 30. The Mercedes driver then set his sights on Sainz, who was struggling with tyre wear and losing time to Hamilton. On Lap 28, Hamilton made his move on Sainz, passing him into Turn 1 with a late braking manoeuvre. Russell followed suit on Lap 32, using his DRS advantage to breeze past Sainz on the main straight.
Verstappen was now leading by over 20 seconds, with Hamilton and Russell in second and third respectively. The only threat to Verstappen’s victory seemed to be his teammate Sergio Perez, who had started from 11th and was running a long first stint on medium tyres. The Mexican driver pitted on Lap 40 for soft tyres, hoping to catch Russell in the final laps with fresher rubber. However, he came out behind Sainz and Stroll, who were yet to pit for a second time.
Perez quickly dispatched Stroll on Lap 42, but had more trouble getting past Sainz, who was defending well despite his worn tyres. Perez finally made it past Sainz on Lap 48, but by then he had lost too much time to challenge Russell for the podium. He closed the gap to less than four seconds by the end of the race, but it was not enough.
Verstappen crossed the line to take his fifth win of the season, extending his lead in the championship standings to 53 points over Perez. Hamilton finished second, scoring his best result of the year and moving up to fourth in the standings behind Alonso. Russell completed the podium, scoring his first top-three finish for Mercedes and his second career podium after his maiden one in Bahrain last year.
It was a great race for Verstappen and Red Bull, who showed their dominance over their rivals once again. It was also a great race for Mercedes, who bounced back from their poor start to the season with a double podium and some much-needed points. It was not such a great race for Ferrari and Aston Martin, who were unable to match the pace of Red Bull and Mercedes and had to settle for fifth and sixth places respectively.
