I’m going to write something funny about something which actually happened in Formula 1. A throwback story, if you will. Here goes:
Do you remember the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix? The one where Lewis Hamilton won his first world championship by overtaking Timo Glock on the last lap? The one where Felipe Massa crossed the finish line as the champion, only to have his dreams shattered seconds later? The one where Ferrari celebrated too early and then had to face the reality of losing the title by one point?
Well, I do. And I also remember something else that happened in that race. Something that was so bizarre and hilarious that it deserves to be told again. Something that involved a giant inflatable soccer ball.
Yes, you read that right. A giant inflatable soccer ball. On lap 10 of the race, a spectator decided to throw a huge ball onto the track, right in front of the pit lane entrance. The ball bounced around on the asphalt, causing some drivers to swerve to avoid it. Luckily, no one hit it or got hit by it, but it was still a very dangerous and stupid thing to do.
The race director immediately deployed the safety car, which led the field around for four laps while marshals tried to remove the ball. But it was not easy. The ball was too big and heavy to be lifted by hand, and it kept rolling away from them. They tried to use a crane, but it couldn’t reach the ball either. They tried to use a fire extinguisher, but it only made the ball spin faster. They tried to use a broom, but it had no effect.
Finally, after several minutes of struggle, they managed to get rid of the ball by pushing it into a gap in the pit wall. The safety car came in and the race resumed. But not before creating one of the most memorable and hilarious moments in Formula 1 history.
